The Second Story, a center for young writers opening this fall in Fountain Square is celebrating its new space with a night of music, mingling and interactive text-based art on Thursday, June 5.

Please join us at 1043 Virginia Ave. Suite 4 (next to Alchemy) in the Murphy Art Center. We'll open up at 6 p.m. with acoustic music at starting at 7:30 p.m. and lasting until 10 p.m. This evening is intended to help us raise money for our nonprofit space (though no donation is required) and also get everybody together who might want to help with our great cause with their ideas and energy as volunteers.

The excellent musical entertainment on June 5 comes from local musicians Adam Kuhn and Beat Debris join Real Live Tigers of Austin, Texas and Redbear of Chicago. All donations at the show go to benefit The Second Story, which will begin offering free after-school tutoring and writing workshops to students 6 to 18 starting in August.

The fun will continue on June 6 when the Murphy Art Center is open the next evening as part of IDADA’s monthly First Friday Gallery Tour. So, if you can't make it on June 5, come by the next night between 6 and 10 p.m. to check out the space, participate in the text-based art project and listen to the Tonos Triad (http://www.myspace.com/tonostriad) who will be playing for us that night.

A Note from IMPD

A Note from IMPD's Major Cliff Myers..........

You may have heard in the news that about 2,300 Marines from the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit -- based in Camp Lejuene, N.C. -- will be using various locations throughout the city for their Realistic Urban Training Exercise from June 4 to 19.

While some of the activity will take place aboard Camp Atterbury, residents in many areas can expect to see helicopters flying overhead, military vehicles on the roads and Marines patrolling on foot.

Landing sites include Eastgate Mall, Brookside Park, Ellenberger Park, Christian Park, Southeastway Park, Bush Stadium and Douglass Park. Please keep an eye out for our armed forces.

School is out for the summer.

Call for Artists

CALL FOR ARTISTS

to create a proposal for installation of outdoor public art on the Bates Hendricks Esplanade on 1400 & 1500 blocks south New Jersey Street, Indianapolis, for the month of August, 2008 and during the SEND Fab for Less event August 23 & 24.

* Artists should live or work in the SEND area of Indianapolis, which is bounded by Washington Street on the north, Madison Street on the west, Raymond Street on the south and Sherman to Pleasant Run to Keystone on the east.
* Artists should use primarily recycled or natural materials.
* Artists should relate their art to the history of the Bates Hendricks area. It is strongly advised that artists visit the site at South New Jersey Street. History and landscape plan are available on the SEND website at www.sendcdc.org.
* Art should be suitable for all of the public.
* There is no fee to enter a proposal.
* Two artists will be chosen based on proposals by a jury of SEND public art committee members and neighborhood residents.
* The 2 artists chosen will each receive a $400 stipend.
* The art will be installed by August 3, 2008 and should remain until August 31. It should be able to withstand the usual Indianapolis August weather.



Proposals must be received by June 14, 2008.

Proposals should include drawings and a brief description of the artwork.

Include name, address, phone, and email. Artists may include up to three pictures of past or current work.

The goal of the Fab for Less event is to raise funds for SEND, a community development corporation, whose mission is to revitalize the southeast side of Indianapolis and to improve the quality of life for its diverse spectrum of residents. Secondary goals are to raise awareness of SEND, the southeast neighborhoods, the potential of the residents, and to have a venue for resident artists. The 2008 event is focused on the Bates Hendricks neighborhood, which has historical significance. Fab for Less will benefit not only the residents of the Bates Hendricks Neighborhood, but the hundreds of visitors who will be attracted to the event. Event visitors of all ages, races, and economic backgrounds will be introduced to work of local artists and by displaying the works of art for one month, local residents will have plenty of opportunities to view and enjoy these installations. The funds raised will help SEND to continue to revitalize the southeast area of Indianapolis. Past investment has resulted in more than 130 affordable homes, more than 400 homes repaired, and 135 apartment units, as well as 150,000 square feet of renovated commercial space, six parks, hundreds of trees, and several works of public art.

Why: Around 550 women and children have been integrated into Shepherd Community Center’s programs that were previously served by Indianapolis-based Wheeler Mission Ministries. Last February, Wheeler moved back to their focus, which is providing goods and services to the homeless, poor and needy of Central Indiana. Shepherd, whose mission is to aid families and children on Indianapolis’ near east side, has begun integrating these individuals into their existing continuum of care. This has created some significant funding needs for Shepherd. Our goal is to raise awareness of those needs and help off-set them through a fundraiser, “One Can Make A Difference”. We hope you will consider attending the fundraiser or donating directly to Shepherd Community Center and aid their mission to break the cycle of poverty.

an opportunity to promote your neighborhood

The deadline to apply for your neighborhood to be considered part of Unsung Indy has been extended. If you submit your materials to IACED by the start of business on June 16, 2008 your application will be considered. Thank you to all those neighborhood leaders who have called and expressed interest. Please continue to share the application materials with your friends and neighborhood colleagues.

The Indiana Association for Community Economic Development (IACED) is excited to partner with the Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC) to tell the story of unsung Indianapolis. Unsung Indy is a brand awareness campaign designed to promote all the great things neighbors know about living in urban Indianapolis. If you want to promote the great things about your neighborhood, review and complete the Unsung Indy application package.

The goal of Unsung Indy is to use the rich diversity of Indianapolis' neighborhoods to present a highly-visible and finely-crafted case for the merits of city living and to pave the way for successful marketing of individual neighborhoods and projects.

Indianapolis is a city of neighborhoods. Unsung Indy is an effort to celebrate the unique variety of the collective whole. Each neighborhood has its niche, and each falls under the Unsung Indy banner. The Unsung Indy campaign will initially feature a diverse sampling of the city's neighborhoods.

Unsung Indy is about promoting the following major themes of city living.
* Distinctive homes and buildings
* Community and interesting neighbors
* Reduced stress and more leisure active lifestyle
* Rich cultural life
* Investment potential

The Unsung Indy initiative will select 3 to 5 neighborhoods to pilot in 2008. The selected neighborhoods will use the Unsung Indy creative customized to tell the unique stories of your community. All selected neighborhoods will need to provide a $1,500 cash match.

I encourage you to work with other organizations to obtain information and complete the worksheet. This worksheet is an important first step in selecting the neighborhoods to represent Unsung Indy. Upcoming Road Work

LATEST "PROJECT OPEN MARKET" TRAFFIC CHANGES

The Indianapolis Department of Public Works (DPW) will be shifting the current Washington Street lane restrictions eastward for continued work on Project Open Market. Starting on or after May 29, 2008, the center three lanes of Washington Street will be closed from the interstate to just past Cruse Street (a few hundred feet east of Southeastern Avenue). As a result, there will be no westbound access to Washington Street from the Southeastern Avenue intersection (which also impacts Shelby Street).

Drivers on westbound Southeastern Avenue should take:

• State Avenue north to Washington Street or Michigan Street

Drivers on northbound Shelby Street should take:

• English Avenue east to State Avenue, north to Washington Street or Michigan Street

These lane restrictions are in effect 24 hours a day, for approximately three weeks, while storm sewer construction work is conducted.

In conjunction with this storm sewer work, utility work will also force the closure of the two southernmost lanes of Washington Street, from College Avenue eastward approximately 100 feet. These particular lane restrictions on Washington Street go into effect on or after June 2, 2008, and will last about a week.

Other traffic changes are expected throughout the summer as work on Project Open Market progresses east along Washington Street. DPW encourages residents and motorists to sign up for e-mail traffic alerts at www.indygov.org/dpw/openmarket.

PROJECT OPEN MARKET

Project Open Market is a city initiative to spur investment and create economic opportunity on the Near-Eastside by removing the Market Street I-65/70 interstate ramp and building a new interchange along East Washington Street. The project, financed mostly through federal grant dollars, will open up Market Street for new business opportunities and create a more pedestrian-friendly corridor that will better connect the Near-Eastside to downtown Indianapolis. Study Circles

INRC Wins Video Award

INRC was encouraged to apply to a video contest offered by Everyday Democracy (formerly Study Circles Resource Center). The contest was for a submission of a video, 3-5 minutes in length, highlighting the impact of Study Circles in our community. Last week, we received an email notice that our submission was selected as the winner! In addition to great publicity and recognition of the success of Study Circles across Indianapolis, INRC won $1,000.

We'll use the $1000 prize for more training around digital storytelling and using video to tell the story of Study Circles here in Indianapolis. Below is part of the Everyday Democracy newsletter blast announcing the winner with a link to the video now showing on their YouTube site.

Summer Youth Program Assistant

POSITION AVAILABLE

Summer Youth Program Assistant – will assist the Youth Programs Coordinator implementation of SECS’ 2008 Summer Youth Program “Youth Improving Communities.” Assistants will work directly with neighborhood youth ages 12-17 on life skills development, civic engagement, reading skills, and job-readiness skills. The position is for 5 weeks at 30 hours a week, 7:30am – 2:30pm. The program will consist of the following components:

• Attend Staff Orientation
• Assist with implementation of program components
• Supervise up to 20 youth at all program activities
• Provide mentoring throughout program
• Encourage and motivate youth in reading program
• Direct and participate in recreational activities and community service projects

REQUIREMENTS:
- Must be 21 years of age
- Have an interest in improving the community
- Must like kids
- Must be able to physically stand, walk, and be outside for long periods of time

The Theater Within

Who is the perfect husband.....

Imaging Brad

As many local stages go dark towards the end of their traditional arts seasons, The Theater Within is just warming up for summer with Imagining Brad, a work which showcases the mission to present work which ignites dialogue.

No one could be more pleased at reactions to the theater's recent presentations of Neil Labute's Bash: Latterday Plays and Moises Kauffman's The Laramie Project. Both critics and audiences testified that there is room in Indianapolis for a new vision. With this third production of the theater's inaugural season, the artists of The Theater Within are excited about a script that will be new to many, if not most, Midwest audiences. Peter Hedges' short tale of the friendship formed between two women with a common secret provoked strong reactions when it premiered nearly twenty years ago and continues to challenge the beliefs and assumptions of those who encounter it today.

Local musicians Adam Kuhn (above) and Beat Debris join Real Live Tigers of Austin, Texas and Redbear of Chicago in an evening of acoustic music at the opening celebration. All donations at the show go to benefit The Second Story, which will begin offering free after-school tutoring and writing workshops to students 6 to 18 starting in August.

In addition to enjoying live music, visitors can also participate in an interactive, writing-based art installation that will start that night and continue when the Murphy Art Center is open the next evening as part of IDADA’s monthly First Friday Gallery Tour.

Trash Schedule for Memorial Day

No Trash Service on May 26

This is just a friendly reminder that there will be NO residential trash service, heavy trash, or curbside recycling collection on Monday, May 26, in observance of Memorial Day. All solid waste services will run one day late for the entire week. Monday’s trash, heavy trash and curbside recycling will be picked up on Tuesday, Tuesday’s on Wednesday, and so on, ending with Friday’s routes being run on Saturday. All routes will return to normal schedules on Monday June 2.

Foreclosure Prevention

Don't Let the Walls Foreclose in on You

In an effort to reduce the number of home foreclosures in Indiana, Lt. Governor Becky Skillman announced the launch of a major statewide initiative to assist Hoosiers who are in danger of losing their homes.

Hoosiers facing mortgage default or foreclosure can call a toll-free number, 877-GET-HOPE. This toll- free, confidential help-line will be available 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m daily, at no cost to the consumer. Also, a web site www.877GetHope.org will be available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The initiative is led by the Indiana Foreclosure Prevention Network (IFPN), a public-private partnership of government agencies, lenders, community service, and housing-related organizations. State certified foreclosure intervention specialists will answer the calls and foreclosure cases will be triaged over the phone through loan modification, forbearance, or other mechanisms. If the cases cannot be triaged over the phone and require intensive one-on-one counseling, the cases will be referred to the Indiana Foreclosure Prevention Network (IFPN) Agencies. Offers Funding to Help Lenders
Relieve Threat of Foreclosure

The Federal Home Loan Bank of Indianapolis (FHLBI), has announced a new $100 million lending initiative, HomeRetain, to help FHLBI financial institution members assist families facing foreclosure. HomeRetain is a part of the FHLBI's Community Investment Program (CIP), a source of wholesale funds for member institutions involved in housing or community economic development activities that benefit low- and moderate-income families or neighborhoods.

HomeRetain is an additional $100 million offering of CIP, to encourage members to provide mortgage modification or refinancing to homeowners with incomes at or below 115 percent of HUD area median incomes (family of four not adjusted for family size) who are at risk of delinquency or default. HomeRetain provides the CIP discount off regular advance programs, providing funds at the FHLBI's cost of funds plus a small markup to cover administrative costs.

HomeRetain funds are targeted to modify or refinance mortgages for primary residences in Indiana, Michigan or any other state in which a member does business. The new or modified loan provided to the consumer must be a fully amortizing, fixed-rate mortgage.

The FHLBI encourages loans funded with HomeRetain advances to be retail originated. The maximum loan-to-value ratio is 100%.

HomeRetain advances are made available to eligible members on a secured basis only and are subject to the normal credit and collateral policies of the FHLBI. Prepayment fees may also apply.

Borrowers may not take any "cash out" of the refinancing, but may only use the funds to pay off the first or second mortgage principal outstanding, any delinquent amounts owed, plus reasonable and customary fees, loan origination and processing fees. Member discretion is permitted in refinancing delinquent borrowers.

Borrowers must complete a homebuyer counseling program provided by or based on one provided by an organization recognized as experienced in homeowner counseling. The counseling program must cover, at minimum, financial literacy, predatory lending, mortgage financing, credit-worthiness, household budgeting, and home maintenance. Counseling may be provided by the member or by another competent party.

Indianapolis Department of Public Works announcement

Project Open Market

Beginning Monday, May 19, 2008, the Indianapolis Department of Public Works (DPW) will close College Avenue (one-way northbound) to through traffic between Fletcher Avenue and Washington Street. As part of Project Open Market, this closure will last 24 hours a day, for approximately two weeks, while storm sewer construction work is conducted at the intersection of Washington Street and College Avenue.

Washington Street will also be reduced to four lanes (two eastbound and two westbound) 24 hours a day from College Avenue to Davidson Street during this two-week time period.

Other lane restrictions and traffic changes are expected throughout the summer as work on Project Open Market progresses east of College Avenue along Washington Street. DPW encourages residents and motorists to visit www.indygov.org/dpw/openmarket to sign up for e-mail traffic alerts.

DETOUR ROUTES

Drivers affected by the College Avenue closure should take:

• South Street (Fletcher Avenue) west to Delaware Street, Delaware Street north to New York Street, New York Street east to College Avenue

Drivers affected by the Washington Street lane restrictions should take:

• State Avenue north to Michigan Street, west on Michigan Street (westbound traffic)
• East on New York Street, south on State Street (eastbound traffic)

PROJECT OPEN MARKET

Project Open Market is a city initiative to spur investment and create economic opportunity on the Near-Eastside by removing the Market Street I-65/70 interstate ramp and building a new interchange along East Washington Street. The project, financed mostly through federal grant dollars, will open up Market Street for new business opportunities and create a more pedestrian-friendly corridor that will better connect the Near-Eastside to downtown Indianapolis. I apologize for sending the May calendar so late, but the focus of May is preparing for the Summer Reading Program. Although the first day to earn points is not until June 9, East Washington Branch Library is starting with a Kick-off on Saturday, May 31, 1:30 – 4:00. Activities will include food, crafts and Glamente the Magician.

The Summer Reading Program runs from June 9, through August 2, and children up to age 18 may register to read books and earn points to spend on prizes. Additional information about the program is available by contacting the library, 275-4360.

In addition to the reading program, starting June 11, films will be shown on Wednesdays at 1:00 and story times will be offered at time posted on the June/July calendars. Three special programs requiring registration will be:

Last month, in preparation for the Art on Procession Parade, Us By Numbers created a Fountain Square mural, hosted a community "paint-out" and marched it through the parade. Now, they want it to live in our fair village...but where?

If you have ideas, or a space to hang a 4'x48' canvas banner (interior please), please contact me at the numbers or email below! The only catch is that Us By Numbers must have the rights to come back and retrieve it on loan for further marketing to create more murals in other communities. We are the inaugural test market for this venture and we should be very proud to display this work of community art right here in Fountain Square.

If there are several suitable locations, we can easily have the mural travel to various locales.

I know that many in the Southeast area are familiar with Angel Food Ministries, especially since Shepherd Community has been involved with it for some time, but for those who cannot easily make the trip to Shepherd, especially those in the Fountain Square area, the Fountain Square Church of Christ is now a Host Site for ordering and distribution. This is a great way for anyone to save money on groceries. Menus are released monthly and a basic order costs $30. We accept food stamps and cash; there are no qualifications for the program. Abandoned Housing & Public Safety

Dear Neighborhood Leader and/or Community Development Representative,

Abandoned Housing and Public Safety have become an important issue across the community, and it is proven that there is a direct correlation between the two. Where there is crime, there will be abandoned houses and where there are a lot of abandoned houses, there will be crime.

On Saturday, May 17, 2008 the Department of Metropolitan Development, Division of Community Economic Development will host a Vacant/ Abandoned Buildings Training. The training will be held at Martin University (2171 Avondale Place Indianapolis, IN 46218) in Room F from 12 noon to 1:30PM. Our goal with this training is to determine where the highest populations of abandoned/ vacant structures are within your neighborhood so that the City can assist in providing resources to combat this issue to move towards making Indianapolis the “Safest City in the World.” This requires a lot of work, dedication, and collaboration with neighborhood groups, community development corporations, not-for-profits, as well as other stakeholders within your neighborhoods.

With this training:

* Neighborhoods will understand the process of how the City determines Vacant/Abandoned buildings in the communities.

* Neighborhoods will be able to correctly survey Vacant/Abandoned buildings in the neighborhoods using city guidelines and tools.

* Neighborhoods will be able to track the progress of where these buildings are in the system as they report them.

* Neighborhoods will be able to remonstrate against problem properties in their communities thereby creating empowerment and ownership for the well being of the community.

* And finally, Neighborhoods will have the opportunity to have input on the process itself.

Additionally, you will have the opportunity to canvas the immediate area assuring a hands-on experience with the tools. Please wear something comfortable and the appropriate footwear as we take our “short” trek through the neighborhood.

I am contacting you today because Habitat is looking to build on 1613 Ingram, 2353 and 2357 Sheldon, within the next few months and I do not have any families for these addresses! I was wondering if any of you have someone who you feel would be perfect for our program and those address. Even if they are a little over or under or income requirements but have good credit, I am open to meeting with them. They don't even need to come to an orientation at this point. The deadline to find a family for 1613 Ingram is in 2 weeks and if we don't find a family then we may have to postpone the build and we do not want to do that. We know there is a deserving family in the Indianapolis area that needs a home.

If you have someone, again, just have them call me directly, ask for me, and have them mention that they are interested in 1613 Ingram (or the other lots, but specifically right now 1613 Ingram).

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Indiana is inviting us to another Faith, Soul, Rock and Roll concert!!! This concert will be on Friday, June 13th from 7-10pm at Butler University’s Reilly Room (in the Atherton Union). There will be light snacks, door prizes, and stories from a few of our matches. There is no charge for this event.

Help us beautify our new front yard! We will be installing the landscaping at the new KIBI headquarters, a LEED rated building in Fountain Square. We have 11 trees, 97 shrubs, and over 500 perennials to go in, framing our front door and parking lot, and creating a small pocket park and rain garden on the corner of our property.

Cats Haven Fundraiser

Cats Haven is hosting it’s first Spring Frenzy!
There will be lots of fun, food and of course—The Razman

Who:Cats Haven, a no kill cat shelter in Central Indianapolis
When:Saturday May 10th, noon to 4pm
Where:La Maison du Chat, 2603 North College Avenue, Indianapolis
Why:To raise funds for the shelter and to raise awareness of the homeless animal population in Indianapolis.

There will be no admission :
Only $ 4.00 for a burger/veggie burger, or hotdog, chips and a drink. There will be a ice cream sundae bar & baked goods for sale. There will be loads of fun for the whole family! You will be able to view a kitten nursery from the front porch windows. A Clown that does face painting, & there will short belly dancing lessons. Great Mother’s Day gifts; hand made jewelry from Gypsy Cat, beautiful photography from a local artist April Tchiguka, hand stamped cards by Rebecca. For your pets, wonderful organic products from Fuzzy Paws and so much more! Come enjoy the beginning of Spring and share your love for our furry friends! We are always in need of help and supplies at the shelter. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer, there will be sign up sheet at this event. Greetings, Everyone!

For those whom I don't know yet, I'm Sarah Adams, owner of AV Framing Gallery (1139 Shelby) and chair of the FSMA Events Committee. I put on parties!

The weather is warm and there's fun in the parking lot--must be time to start planning the Fountain Square Art Fair (FSAF), sponsored by the FSMA. This year, as last, it will run in conjunction with Masterpiece in a Day (MIAD), on Saturday, September 27.

This is a fun, well-attended event (the biggest day in FS), which I'm hoping to grow bigger this year with the addition of entertainment! It's also great fun to be in on the planning of this terrific day.

help coordinate artists, entertainers, and visitors!**

Our initial planning meeting will be held at AV Framing Gallery on Friday, May 16, 12:00-1:00pm. We will meet only monthly until just before the event. And whatever can be efficiently achieved through email, will be. Please let me know if you are interested in volunteering! If you can't make the meeting, or would like to see a different time/date, let me know that too.

2008 Youth Activity Directory

2008 Youth Activity Directory Now Available!

The MCCOY 2008 Youth Activity Directory (YAD) is now available. The YAD, a free annual comprehensive resource guide highlighting youth development opportunities, reaches over 110,000 young people, families, and youth-serving organizations throughout central Indiana each year. With listings for volunteer opportunities, educational programs, job skill development, summer programs, and much more, the YAD connects the community to a wealth of beneficial activities, programs and organizations.

MCCOY will have two community distribution days:

Thursday, May 8th & Friday, May 9th
10:00am-3:00pm
United Way parking garage lower level, located at 3901 N. Meridian.

Due to popularity and increased demand of the YAD, donations are being accepted. If not able to attend either of the YAD distribution days, please stop by the MCCOY office, located at 3901 N. Meridian, Suite 201, between 8:30am and 4:00pm to pick up your copy.
